MAYOR HAHN ANNOUNCES FREE CASH FOR COLLEGE PROJECT SERVES
OVER 10,000 LA STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
Hosts picnic to thank volunteers for participating in Free Cash for College
GRIFFITH PARK - Mayor Jim Hahn today hosted a picnic at Griffith Park to thank volunteers who participated in his Free Cash for College project. Mayor Hahn also showed his appreciation to the 1,000 volunteers who worked to expand access to education for 10,000 Los Angeles students by providing volunteers with free passes to the Los Angeles Zoo.
"I want to personally thank all of you for volunteering in the Free Cash for College project," said Mayor Hahn. "The College Board reports that the average college graduate will earn one million dollars more over a lifetime than someone with just a high school diploma and you contributed to making that a reality for 10,000 students."
"The Free Cash for College project was a great success," said President of the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute Dr. Harry Pachon. "Innovative, enthusiastic and capable volunteers turned out in to help the community in significant numbers."
Volunteers who participated in Free Cash for College represented a cross-section of Los Angeles, including business, labor, education, community-based organizations and government.
"Ask most CEOs what is the most important asset in their companies and they will say it is their people, their employees," said President and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Rusty Hammer. "The Free Cash for College project is an important partnership between the City and the business community to build the workforce that will power L.A.'s great companies of the 21st century."
The Free Cash for College project consisted of the College and Career Convention held in November 2002, where students and families learned about the importance of a higher education and how a college education can be accessible and affordable.
The Convention was followed by a 3-month public education campaign about the significance of a higher education, culminating in Free Cash for College Day on February 1, 2003. Free Cash for College Day mobilized financial aid experts and volunteers to help high school seniors and their families from all over Los Angeles to fill out their financial aid forms.
