Happy New Year to all the friends and family of the Los Angeles Police
Department. I hope all of your holiday celebrations were safe and blessed
with joy and happiness. Now that the rush of the holiday season is over,
the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department look forward to
another year of serving the people of Los Angeles.

The following is the monthly update for January 2002. I hope you find the
information useful. I encourage you to continue to visit our Web site at
www.LAPDOnline.org as it has grown to over 10,000 pages since its inception
in 1998.

LAPD ARCHIVES PHOTO GALLERY SHOW

The Department is continuing to coordinate the touring photo gallery show
titled “LAPD - 100 Years of Photography” featuring law enforcement and
crime scene photographs from LAPD photo archives. The gallery show will
travel to all Community Police Stations and various City landmarks. The Los
Angeles Police Federal Credit Union is sponsoring this traveling exhibit.
The public is invited to attend the show to view these historic photographs.

The January show schedule continues at West Valley Community Police Station
through January 6 and moves to Devonshire Community Police Station on
January 7. The show moves to Van Nuys Community Police Station beginning
January 14, to Foothill Community Police Station beginning January 21, and
to North Hollywood Community Police Station beginning January 28.
Additional dates and locations will be published in February 2002.

JANUARY SAFETY TIPS – CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

The purpose of this information is to impart to the public, basic features
which may be incorporated into dwellings, to make them more secure and to
prevent crime. The same design concepts improve the ability of police to
monitor activities within the community. The proper design and effective
use of public and private space can lead to a reduction in the incidence
and fear of crime, reduction in calls for police service and to increase
the quality of life within a community.

Landscaping and fencing

* Specify thorny plants and landscape to create a natural barrier and to
deter unwanted entry.

* Specify vines or planted wall coverings to deter graffiti. Avoid blank
spaces that may be an invitation to graffiti vandals.

* Provide landscape and fencing that do not create hiding places for
criminals. Discourage crime by creating an inhospitable environment for
criminals.

* Provide attractive and durable masonry or fencing whenever possible.
Consider creative solutions to fencing schemes that work aesthetically as
well as functionally.

Lighting

* Provide lighting systems that provide nighttime vision for motorists to
increase the visibility of pedestrians, other vehicles and objects (that
should be seen and avoided).

* Provide lighting systems which provide nighttime vision for pedestrians,
homeowners and business people to permit pedestrians to see one another, to
see risks involved in walking at night and to reduce the risk of trip-and-
fall accidents. Provide lighting systems that will enhance police ability
for surveillance, patrol and pursuit.

* Provide lighting systems that minimize glare, light and pollution and
light trespass. Where necessary, provide light transition zones.

On behalf of the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department, we
look forward to serving you and all the people who live, work and visit the
City of Los Angeles in this New Year.
